Mexican Talavera Ceramic Lizards
There are at least ten different models or themes on each of the Talavera garden ceramic lizards shown at Fine Crafts & Imports website. These themes are recognized by the different color combinations present on each small or big ceramic lizard, they are: Sunflower, alcatraz (lily flowers), blue deco Talavera, green deco Talavera, colorful Talavera, Desert (cactus), Sun and Moon (eclipse), Peacock (green, blue or yellow), fish, and flowers.
Besides that, there are different sizes that roughly can be classified into three categories: Small ceramic lizard, medium ceramic lizard and big ceramic lizard; which are about 8", 12", and 23" length, respectively. It is easy to identify each ceramic lizard theme from the picture itself; to help a little bit we have described below each one fo the different Talavera ceramic themes.
This lizard is usually decorated with sunflowers all the way around its body, mostly in its central part. It might include dark blue backgrounds. Generally the tail and legs are handpainted in a dark green color.
It has a big amount of lily flowers hand painted on most of its body, except the legs, neck and tail which are usually dark green. Alcatraz is the Spanish word for "lily flower". Generally includes some green foliage and the background is dark blue. There are some samples of ceramic lizards and ceramic iguanas in this website. This flavour is perfect for desert-style gardens. The background color is brownish and features desert motifs on top of it like cactus, thorn trees, sand and desert animals.
The Talavera ceramic traditionally has been defined as the use of white and blue colors. Dark blue as background and white as a foreground color. The blue déco ceramic lizard is an example of this original style. Most of its body is dark blue and the decorations are in white. For most of the lizards, legs, tail, head and neck are painted with dark solid green color, but it might be equally dark blue or any other color the artist selects.
Based on the traditional dark and blue colors used for the Talavera ceramic, artists and craftsmen have been innovating with new color combinations. A typical one is the green deco Talavera ceramic, which consists primarily of two colors: green as background and white as a foreground color. Based on these only two colors the designs are very impressive. A little bit of blue paint can be used to limit borders. What a great accent for your garden décor.
The creativity limit for this decoration theme is just the craftsman imagination. Usually there is a very rich color combination in squared patterns with a common background color: Green, red, and white.
The Sun & Moon handpainted theme is know as Eclipse too. The background color is mostly dark blue, emulating the deep universe and the objects around are stars, The Moon, Sun and planets. There is a night landscape on each ceramic lizard.
By far, one of the most popular handpainted decoration is the peacock-theme. It might come in different color combinations: Green, blue, yellow, etc, but the theme is always the expanded peacock tail feathers. The most common color for the feathers is green. This is a perfect combination in harmony with your green garden and landscape.
The last, but not least, color decoration is the fish-based theme. This decoration is very colorful because the colors taken to paint are mostly based in tropical fish natural colors. Is is common to see yellows, reds, oranges, blues in the paintings. The background is mostly dark blue.
